Underdog pee wee squad surprises city teams

Powell River is on top of the BC baseball world following the Pee Wee A Mets’ victorious performance in Surrey.

Provincial finals began on the last Thursday in July, when the Mets took on Burnaby. The team recorded a mercy win in the fifth inning when it led with a score of 11-0.

Friday morning, the boys played Salmon Arm, losing a close contest 5-4. They came back in the afternoon with a 7-5 encounter with Aldergrove.

A win over Surrey by a 12-5 margin earned the Mets players first place in their pool and a berth in the semi-finals.

Sunday morning, the Mets took on Victoria and posted a 12-5 win. Victoria had finished ahead of Powell River in the zone playdowns earlier in July but both teams advanced to the provincials.

In the championship game, Powell River met Surrey again. After scoring a large lead early, the Mets clinched the provincial title with a heart-stopping 8-7 victory in the final inning.

According to one of the parents, Chantelle Jackson, “the games were spectacular to watch as the Powell River boys played their best ever.”

Brandon Rairie and Colby Shelton each hit a home run that helped secure wins. Jayden Saban, though injured after the second game, guarded home plate “exceptionally well,” said Chantelle.

There were some “amazing” catches by outfielders Shelton, Jacob Budgell, Jamie Callaghan and Cody Jackson. Infielders Michael Lance, Jeremy Hopper, Andy Dupuis and Jordon Knutson also recorded some “incredible” plays, according to Chantelle.

Rairie, Hunter Findlater and Jacob Harper each won most valuable player (MVP) of the game, recognition for their outstanding pitching. Saban was named MVP in the semifinal for his quick action and effective guarding of home plate.

Team manager Greg Piccinin did an “exceptional job at strategizing the lineup and positioning the boys in each game,” said Chantelle, with the help of his two coaches Dan Dupuis and Ethan Hasler. “A huge thank you goes out to each of them from we parents who will remember this weekend for the rest of our lives,” she added.
