SAILORS TRAVEL TO THE EAST COAST FOR CARRIBEAN FLARE

DECEMBER 28, 2011 much has happened since I last left you - went off to have breakfast I did and a whole week has gone by.
Our few days at The Stone House was incredible.  Geraldo and Xinia did catch up with us and toured us around the ten acres of their retirement property.  They have grand plans for it and continue to insist that we plan to visit whenever we can....it will be amazing when finished with plans of another permanent casa being built - they hope to be moved in by the end of 2012.  Check out the photo galley for pictures.
We continued on to the east coast towards Limon with Geraldo as our most proficient guide.  His Ford pickup is amazing on these mountainous roads and though  he is a crazy typical Costa Rican driver we continue to arrive safely to these amazing places he brings us to.  Traveling in the mountains is an experience I swear I never will do again with him but I continue to agree to go along.  LOL.  The roads are winding and he does drive very fast; knowing  the area he is amazing.  The Port of Limon is an old port town with much  Caribbean history.  Geraldos   family roots are here so he had alot to tell and show us.  The atmosphere is rich with Rascafarian color and a haven for young folks who are travelling light and full of aticipation for adventure.  We drove back   to Puerto Veijo for fine dining in the middle of the jungle and then returned  Manzanello for the nite.  I must tell you that we have had alot of rain........it started in Atenas the first week we arrived to continue now here as tropical deluge!!!! We learned that it was caused by weather in the Caribbean so of course the east coasat was hit pretty hard as was evident with trees being blown around and felled as well as bridges over flowing with rain water.  Some of the homes we passed, even though built up high on stilts still were effected with the fall.  The local folks continued to walk, ride thier bikes and carry on their lives being used to this rainey season.

Our hotel room was very sufficient, very economical......and comfortable.  Because of the rain we basically just rested  listening to the rain...........and watched tv.  Early the next morning we walked across the street to the little cafe and had an excellent cup of coffee.  It was out side of course as most of them are so we were able to and watch as the accumulated water that surround the place just became part of the garden.  The resident cat spotted me right away and I shared my leche with him........of course he was orange!!!!  We have not seen many felines on this trip and this one was well taken care of.  Actually most of the dogs in Costa Rica are pretty healthy as well....they dont all have homes but are in pretty good health.

Claes and I walked on along the beach up a trail and into the jungle.  Gerald is a runner so most mornings he is off on his own.. We went off the beaten track and found  some some monkeys and hiked up to an incredible vista area...............just amazing to see the Caribbean Ocean crashing up underneath us against an incredible section of rough rocks. This picture does not to it justice.........check out the rest in the galley on the right!!

As the photos will show  we  met a few fellows with some freshly caught lobster and crab.  We chatted with them and took pictures and later continued on to  a restaurant down the road for a treat of  an incredible spot that offered  Caribbean style lob!!!!!  I even found a "Kaiser"  a non alcoholic beer to wet my lips with.   Too good!!  All this time it has begun to rain again...........the drops are huge and the drainage amazing with much debris and wind causing some destruction along the way but we manage with Geraldo truck to get through and back to our hotel.  The next day we drove back in a northerly direction, keeping in mind that we have driven nearly to the  end of the Costa Rican road.....bringing us very close to Panama......  back up through a little town where we're treated to an east coast speciality called  "Pattie" a local homemade morsel of baked batter filled with a mixture of corn, beans and meat, spiced with a Cajun flare to result in the best ever taste.  It was hot and  so good.  We brought a huge amount home for the rest of the family. We  drove  back over the mountains by way of a different route coming out on the east side of San Jose missing the city and down into Atenas on Sunday night.
It was good to be home and back to "our" bed. (Not complaining but a point to remember is that we have been sleeping in many different beds the last few weeks and do miss our comfy bed aboard the WhiteShell!!)  Thank You God for a safe return, and incredible four day road trip all to rest tomorrow and be off again in a northerly direction to Liberia and the Pacific Coast...to be continued.
