Leaving Comox and on to Port Angeles

AWAY COMOX HARBOUR
After many month of preparation and many years of dreaming “The Captain” and I, our small feline crew of Joey and Katie left the Comox Harbor at high noon on August 19th, 2009 aboard our vessel The White Shell II!
The previous weeks had been filled with emotion as we bade our many dear friends and family farewell. The glorious day had finally come. Our hearts were sadden yet pounding with anticipation; we shoved off. As we left the fuel dock we heard and saw Jen and Dan of the . on the dock hailing us on with flares and noise makers a very memorable send off! Thanks guys.

As we motored out of the marina I turned back every few minutes to get one last glimpse of our lives in the beautiful Comox Valley………………now we were really off on our adventure. It was really happening!
Initially we were not provided with much wind so we motored…… past The Spit where many years ago Claes was a young sea cadet…past Tree Island that reminded us of many hours of sailing, smiling and sunning with our dear friends Jan, Brad and Judy…………..and even on a few rainy days with our faith family Living Hope. (Oh, my! there were my tears again. ) With my heart heavy I busied myself in the galley re organizing my stuff and making snacks. Finally the packing was over the shuffling complete. The Katz was awesome, settling down and finding a comfortable spot to sun and sleep.
The day spent itself out and The Captain called an early day tying up alongside a log boom directly across from Nanaimo. It was fitting and reminded us of many years living on the west coast in Powell River with Claes working in the forest industry. Katie was first to jump off ship to explore with cautionary Joey following suite sometime later. It was great exercise but short lived as they stayed fairly close to home…yes; The White Shell II was officially our home. We enjoyed a grand supper of fresh Tuna that Tanya, our eldest daughter and family had brought that morning to send us off. (Thanks honey, I cooked it just like you suggested and it was delicious!! The first of many fish meals we hope).
The next morning we motored south to Sydney BC. to connect with Roz our dear friend and recent employer. We had a fun time enjoying the very pleasant harbor and top quality amenities. A shared supper of appies at the Stone house, a few beers and the evening was fine. As she hugged us and walked down the ramp my heart recalled the short but exciting three years that we shared being co-workers of Kye Bay Resort and friends all at the same time. Thank You Roz……………see you in The Baja this winter right?
Thursday morning we left early in the morning towards Victoria. We had a great time sailing and enjoying the Gulf Islands. Later in the afternoon the wind was crazy………..calm one minute and beating us up the next and in the midst of that we had a fuel problem. Claes was amazing getting us turned around and away from the rocks. Neither one of us could remember where the fuel filters were and after digging and lots of praying the fuel filter was found right where it was suppose to be. The wheel house in disarray, we were somewhat rattled but Claes stayed focused, and made the exchange and we motored back up the coast a short ways to a quiet spot to anchor for the night. Supper was late that night but we were very thankful for it and for a safe spot to sleep!
