The Story of guy and gal!

Yes, we have been out in the harbor for over a week now and are beginning to feel rather comfortable. Being only a dingy away from the dock is great as we motor back and forth whenever we need something even if it is just a social time. There is no shortage of that here as there are many, many cruisers, and ex-cruisers that visit and re-visit this area. This seems to be a very popular location probably because it is very nice weather wise, not overly commercialized and is populated by a very welcoming Mexican community. The cruiser presence is very strong and well organized but not cliquey. They are very involved in the community and are well received. The "Net" which airs every morning on the VHF introduces you to the area and provides all the information that you need while directing you to the Club Cruisero. Membership there is very dear—one hundred pesos per year-which gives you access to book trades, DVD borrowing, service information, weather reports and soci...

This post has been in the workings for a month or two as I have attempted to point out a few concerns for those that are planning on living on their boats and also for some of you who might be interested in our new life. As we spend more time aboard Whiteshell we continue to modify our style and we continue to learn as well making at work in progress. I will attempt to share points of interest and appreciate and look forward to any questions or comments.   Fine tuning the workings of the galley—kitchen in "boat" language. The first concern is space—there is not much of it which means that every piece of equipment must be very efficient and follow the ship' rule: everything must have two purposes. Quite a treat to be in a town/city, in this case La Paz, which is fairly large and very clean and very nice! The folks are ready for all the cruisers and go out of there way to make our stay a good one.  There is a very avid club right here at Marina La Paz, which is close to the downtown area so becomes the centre and meeting place for everyone, whether you are on the hook or tied to a dock.  Some folks are here for most of the winter others, like us are just passing though.  Everyday there is program on the VHF  called the net where we can get all sorts of information and make social plans, followed by a coffee time at the club where one can again get info and sign out dvd or trade books.........I enjoyed that much as I was looking for more books by Maeve Binchy........she writes a good story filled with varied and colourful  characters.  Light reading but entertaining. We arrived in La Paz Sunday and have done laundry, rested and gone shopping for provisions…………even partied a little. Now we will clean the boat and read a book then hopefully carry on to San Jose Del Cabos to catch up with you all that are coming down for the holiday………have not confirmed a spot in the marina as yet………..everyone is on Mexican time.   Take care and we will chat soon…internet is not good.   Lue and Claes

Taking a day off today!   You might consider that as well.  It is good for the soul to literally take a day off.  You know................do nothing.  Most of us take a day off and fill it up with all the things that we can't or dont get around doing on a normal day. Somehow, sometimes we are forced in taking a day off...........such as happened to me.  (I fell yesterday on our hike to get to the market--hurt my left shoulder pretty much.........did not break the eggs.         (to the right is a picture of  the road to town) The locals never seem to be able to tell you that they do not know..........how far anything is or that they do not know the direction to  somewhere.  It is as if they do not know how to say they do not know.........so they tell you something and as a Gringo  you believe them and in your broken Spanish half understand.  To say the least.........sometime you are off on a wild goose chase....

of the Baja that is.  We are enjoying a glorious red morning sky and coffee in the wheel house, which is our main spot to relax as it gives us protection from the elements at the same times as providing the best view.  We have been thankful for it so many times in the past five months.  Most other sailors are either inside their vessel or out in the open--something that neither Claes or I thought appealing.  He has spent most of his adult life out in the elements working and I could not envision being "couped up".  Claes did an incredible job designing both the dodger and the canvas top that finishes it off.  The two guys in Royston, Craig at his home based business and  Chris at Eldorado Upholstery in Courtenay provided the actual fabrication............thank you guys!!!!  It is the main place when we are underway as the navigation centre and wheel and motor room are all based there.  The other times that we enjoy it of course is when we are...

Beautiful little bay---about fifty miles from La Paz.  The wind blew from the NNW today so we had a rough ride and little sailing but we made it.  We will spend a few days here as there appears to be alot ot explore...........stand by for more pictures.
